"If you like adventure novels, this is a great choice."
The fire raged out of control, leaping across streams, roads, and down into the valleys below. The firemen had been working for the past four days to bring it under control, but due to the winds, nothing could stay the flames. Sometime during the night the wind changed directions, driving the fire across the Canadian border and into Northern Washington. Slowly the flames moved across the mountains, destroying everything in its path.
David Wright, his wife Kathy and daughter Rachel were on their first trip since Kathy's breakdown. David was getting tired of convince his wife there was no danger in camping, at least the way he had planned it. Driving a top of the line RV through the low-lying foothills and slowly deeper into the heavily wooded Cascade mountain range, he had left nothing to chance. There was nothing to be afraid of, the fire was going north. They finally reached their destiny, a beautiful little valley, with a stream running through it.
While checking the smoke in the hills, Rachel noticed a couple wading through the stream. Making it to the clearing, Sharon and Greg Turner collapsed on the ground, breathing hard. Slipping the heavy packs off their shoulders, they slowly stood up as Rachel and her parents came to greet them. After they explained that the winds had shifted, Greg and David decided that it was too late to leave tonight, but they would get out of the valley at daybreak. Greg and Sharon set up their tent and tried to get some sleep.
Sometime after midnight, David was woken up by a strong smell of something between rotten cabbage and an overflowing septic tank; it also had an odor of burned flesh. Grabbing his automatic, he slowly went to door and looked out. All hell had broken loose. Sharon's piercing scream was almost drowned out by a loud roar. Something had Greg by the throat with one arm. Greg's feet were dangling at least four feet off the ground. The creature was gorilla-like and over eight feet tall. David aimed and shot several times until the creature slowly dropped to the ground.
Will they get out before the fire makes in down the mountain? Can Kathy handle all this without another breakdown? What is this creature and are there more?
I found this a surprisingly good book. There is great insight into the working of the relationship between David and Kathy and how a few crises' can change you. This was a subject matter that I had never read anything about before and the author made it interesting. Charles Anderson has done years of research into the Bigfoot legends. He captured my attention and I found myself eager to read more. If you like adventure novels, this is a great choice.
