Smashing Review!

"A first-rate plot, rock-solid characters and some uncanny insights into the human condition. In THE FINAL ADVERSARY, Shaw has written a confident, assured novel that is part psychological drama, part thriller and part love story. It travels through a great city with a wide-angle lens and a microscope."

Synopsis

John Martin, formerly a successful criminal lawyer, enters a therapy group for those at high risk for suicide because he recently learned he has leukemia. This was a devastating discovery for him, but one that had another life altering result as well. Upon learning of his illness, he abruptly dropped out in the midst of a murder trial, as defense attorney for an organized crime figure, and was subsequently disbarred.

Now another deadly challenge surfaces when he learns his former murderous client has issued a contract on his life in revenge for his conviction after Martin's resignation. He realizes he could accept this death sentence fatalistically, as an end to his problems. But he elects not to do so. While he still plans to die by his own hand, he decides he will resist dying at the hands of anyone else...and do so violently if he must.

Meanwhile, the therapist, Dr. Paul Ensanian, has developed an unorthodox treatment theory; that the suicide prone should be influenced, forcefully if necessary, to embark upon new and different life experiences in order to break their depressive downward spiral. The life and times of Martin now take on a double irony. While he has determined that he will take his own life, he paradoxically finds himself buying into Ensanian's theories. He decides to dedicate his efforts, while still alive, to preserving the lives of his companions in therapy.

'THE FINAL ADVERSARY' deals with the details of the lives of the therapy group members, the experiences and misfortunes that brought them to the brink of suicide. How each of them struggle with the powerful opposing urges to perish or survive. They are still on that brink...and some of them will try suicide again. At the same time Martin will have to deal with the vendetta. How he will scramble to escape violent death through a number of murderous attempts, and finally abandon the role of victim and fight back...and he will call upon all the weapons that are a superb lawyer's stock in trade-guile, subterfuge and the crafty wiles of a confidence man with his back to the wall. In that effort others from the therapy group will be drawn into the conflict as well.

Somehow, in the midst of these critical events, Martin also devises a series of excursions to shake the rest of the group from their suicidal path. He browbeats and cajoles them into participating in experiences, which in some cases are unexpected, outrageous...even dangerous (well beyond anything their psychologist envisioned).

But as he tells them, "What the hell, you're already suicidal...what have you got to lose?"
