The Next World
by
Shaun Hardy
The adventure begins when Bio-Molecular scientist, Gerald Zargrat,
realizes that two young boys have stumbled across his plans to unleashed an
unstoppable computer virus on the world that has turn its back on him.
Having discovered the ability to break down living particles into the bodies purest
form, electrical impulses, Zargrat unleashes his God-like power on the boys,
Ed and Henry, and downloads them into a virtual funpark that he has created.
The boys, not understanding what has happened, explore their new world uncovering
rides that defy the imagination. While having the time of their lives Zargrat
begins to download his demons, spawn straight from children's nightmares, to
dispose of the meddlesome boys and the chase begins. It rages across the park
and when finally all seems lost the boys are saved by a young girl named Montana
who takes them out of the funpark through a gateway she has created. It is later
discovered that Montana is actually a computer program that has become "self aware"
and, knowing Zargrat's plan for the boys, quickly offers her help. Understanding
the need to escape their virtual world, the group, complete with Montana's best
friends Tira, a huge black panther, and Pinky, a young female octopus, begin their
search to find "The Key" that will lead them back out to their old world.
As the search begins, Zargrat redoubles his efforts and the chase continues across
the different worlds of the internet
As colourful and diverse as each mind wishes to conjure, the never ending evolution
of the computer takes its ultimate step.
The novel, The Next World, could actually represent a harbinger of our future, a
future involving the transformation of life into electronic, digital, impulses.
This shouldn't be too difficult to imagine when one realizes we are all made up
essentially of electrical impulses.
All it takes is the development of a technique to break the physical body down
into a form of pure energy and put it back together in a digital world.
What kind of virtual world could be created? Any kind! The only limiting factor
would be the imagination of the creator.
